The Belly Dance Guide to Athens, Greece

Athens, Greece is one of the most glorious cities in the world. It is rich in mythology
and ancient history, and has often been called the birthplace of civilization.
It’s many historic hotels, theatres and restaurants are all rich in European
culture, and are all places that Belly Dancers should visit while in Athens.

· During the summer, visit the Herodion Theater in Athens. The walls of the
ancient 161 A.D. theatre stand three stories high and are laid in beautiful
marble and ceramic pieces. The theatre holds classical plays from May to
October, and every belly dancer should visit just to imagine dancing on the
Herodion's majestic stage.

· Visit a sacred temple. The sanctuary of Poseidon at Sounion is one of the
most important sancuraries in Greece. The Poseidon was first mentioned in the
Odyssey, and has even been visited by Menelaos. The sanctuary is known as a
sacred place in Greece, and belly dancers from all over the world can really
appreciate its sacred energy.

· Dance on one of the many beautiful beaches in Greece. There are hundreds to
choose from and dancing to your favorite song on the white sandy beaches of
Athens is sure to be a renewing and relaxing experience.

· See live oriental dancing at one of the many restaurants in Athens. On
weekends, there are a few restaurants that feature belly dancing while you dine.
The small Greek restaurant, Rebetadiko, features live music and dance every
night and is known for it positive energy and lively environment.

· Shop around Athens for new costumes and jewelry. The historical district of
Athens sells Greek fabrics and stones that can be used to make your own
costumes, as well as a few belly dance hip scarves. Visit the center of Athens
on a Sunday to catch the flea markets, where you can find hundreds of things to
buy. If you get lucky, you may find a new costume or vintage Greek jewelry.


·In October, Athens hosts "Oriental Passion," the biggest oriental festival of the
year. The festival features dance shows, concerts, art exhibitions, costume
fashion shows, and dance competitions with over 80 dancers, musicians and choreographers.
Belly Dancers from Estonia, Russia, Morocco, Hungary, Lebanon, and Greece all attend and perform at the festival. The Oriental Passion is one event that any
belly dancer wouldn’t want to miss.

Athens is a great place for vacation, relaxation, and meditation. Its amazing history,
rich culture and Greek Spirit inspire visitors of Athens to slow down, loosen
up, and dance. It’s no wonder that belly dancers of all styles and heritage
travel to Athens to perform, learn, and just relax.
